James owns Muirend Pharmacy and serves as Superintendent Pharmacist — legally and professionally responsible for every clinical service the pharmacy delivers.
An independent prescriber, he leads the pharmacy's clinical direction and has been central to building Muirend into one of the more clinically capable community pharmacies in Glasgow Southside. He lives locally and has worked in the area for over a decade.
Muirend has a strong history as a teaching pharmacy. James has supervised pre-registration pharmacist trainees through their foundation year, giving students real clinical exposure in a busy community setting and contributing to the next generation of pharmacists across the west of Scotland.

Peter McCarthy
Independent Prescriber · Travel Health Lead

Peter is an independent prescribing pharmacist — qualified to assess, diagnose and prescribe autonomously within his clinical competence, without a GP referral or co-signature. In practice that means a patient can see Peter and receive a full clinical assessment, a treatment decision and a prescription in a single appointment. His prescribing qualification covers a range of conditions managed through private consultations at Muirend.
His clinical work at Muirend centres on travel health and private consultations. He leads our Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre — one of a small number of designated YFVCs in Scotland — and runs private clinics covering travel medicine, antimalarials, destination-specific health advice, weight management and acne.
The wider team
Behind the two prescribing pharmacists, Muirend has a team of qualified pharmacy technicians and dispensing assistants who handle the day-to-day rhythm of dispensing.
They dispense, check, pack, and manage the stock that lets the clinical services run smoothly. They also deal with the counter, the phone, the deliveries, and the dozen other things that make a community pharmacy work.
Individual team members are listed with their permission. If you'd like to know who to ask for when you call, the pharmacists are always happy to introduce you.
